Join us for book club as we discuss A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki. Copies of this title are available at the Information Desk. For ages 18 and up.

In Tokyo, sixteen-year-old Nao has decided there's only one escape from her aching loneliness and her classmates' bullying, but before she ends it all, Nao plans to document the life of her great-grandmother, a Buddhist nun who's lived more than a century. A diary is Nao's only solace—and will touch lives in a ways she can scarcely imagine.

Across the Pacific, we meet Ruth, a novelist living on a remote island who discovers a collection of artifacts washed ashore in a Hello Kitty lunchbox—possibly debris from the devastating 2011 tsunami. As the
mystery of its contents unfolds, Ruth is pulled into the past, into Nao's drama and her unknown fate, and forward into her own future.

About the branch

San Gabriel Library was founded in 1915 and moved to its present site in 1967. The non-profit Friends of the San Gabriel Library organization was founded in 1967 to support and promote awareness of the Library and its services.  An interior mural painted by accomplished Native American artist Robert Freeman in 1984 depicts life at the Mission San Gabriel Arcángel in the late eighteenth century while recognizing the importance of the indigenous people of the area, the Gabrielino-Tongva Nation.

The library underwent a refurbishment in 2007 that added an elevator tower, enhanced community room, updated technology, new furnishings, and a bright and colorful redesign which included a paint restoration of the mural.
