Lunch and learn with us! We'll screen recorded talks with young adult authors Aminah Mae Safi and Abdi Nazemian, then have an engaging discussion on diverse representation and protecting our freedom to read. Lunch will be provided. For teens.

Join us for an inspiring Lunch & Learn event as we celebrate the Freedom to Read Community Day of Action on October 19! Featuring a screening of recorded author talks with award-winning young adult authors Aminah Mae Safi and Abdi Nazemian, this session will highlight their literary journeys and commitment to diverse representation. Discover how they tackle issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging through their writing, and explore the rising challenges of book bans across the U.S.

After the talk, we’ll open the floor for an engaging discussion where attendees can share their thoughts and ideas on protecting our freedom to read. Food and refreshments will be provided thanks to the generosity of LA County Library Foundation. Don’t miss this chance to stand up for your right to read!

About the branch

Manhattan Beach Library was started as a subscription library in 1910 by the Neptunian Women's Club of Manhattan Beach.

The library became part of LA County Library in January 1915, making it one of the oldest continuing libraries in the county system. The library moved into a separate building in 1957 and to its current location in 1975. In 2013, construction began on a new more modern building that would meet the needs of the 35,000 residents in the 3.87 square mile community.

On May 1, 2015 the new 21,500 square foot building designed by architectural firm Johnson Favaro opened. It features a two-story modern design with panoramic ocean views, an interactive children's exhibit, fireplace, automated materials handling system, and self-check machines
