Craig Grossi is a Marine Corps veteran, bestselling author, and recipient of the Purple Heart. In 2010, as a member of an elite team of U.S. Marines in Afghanistan, he met an incredible stray dog that he named Fred.

The Malibu Library Speaker Series presents Craig Grossi at Malibu Library on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at 7 pm. Raised in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C., Craig is a Marine Corps veteran, bestselling author, and recipient of the Purple Heart. In 2010, he served as a member of an elite team of U.S. Marines in Sangin, Afghanistan. Sangin was his most dangerous assignment, not the place he thought he would meet an incredible stray dog that he named Fred.

At his talks, Craig shares the captivating story of how he rescued Fred from the battlefield: stuffing him in a duffle bag aboard a helicopter and eventually to the United States. This was just the beginning of their incredible journey together, however. Upon returning home, it was Fred’s turn to rescue Craig in incredible and unexpected ways. It is a story of love, loyalty, and the power of stubborn positivity.

Local bookstore Malibu Village Books will sell Craig's bestselling book Craig & Fred: A Marine, a Stray Dog, and How They Rescued Each Other at the event.

RSVPs are required.

About the branch

Malibu Library, located in the Malibu Civic Center Complex, was established in 1970 by the County of Los Angeles Public Library. Prior to 1970, a bookmobile provided library service to the Malibu community serving residents in Topanga Canyon and along the Pacific Coast Highway.

On April 22, 2012, a grand opening celebration was held to mark the completion of a $6 million renovation of the Malibu Library, designed by the architectural firm of LPA, Inc. and funded by revenue generated from local property taxes.

The new sustainable, LEED-certified library has been redesigned to represent Malibu's sand, sea and sun culture with features such as:

-A replica of the Adamson House tile rug in the main lobby
-A photographic exhibit featuring historical images of the area
-The Children's area featuring a marine life motif, including an 8' by 14' porcelain tile art piece designed by artist Christine Nguyen
-A Teen area that embraces Malibu's surf culture.
