The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning from Tuesday, July 14 through Thursday, July 16. While all LA County Libraries offer a break from the heat during normal hours, many locations have been activated as Cooling Centers with extended hours.
Meet Cory Richards, Alpinist, Photographer, & Author of the new book, Bi-Polar.
Join the City of Manhattan Beach and the Manhattan Beach Library for its inaugural kick-off event in its new Manhattan Beach Library Speaker Series! On Saturday, November 16, we are welcoming renowned American alpinist, photographer, and author Cory Richards as he shares insights from his latest book, Bi-Polar.
Richards is a master storyteller whose journey has taken him to the most remote corners of the globe, capturing breathtaking images for National Geographic and chronicling high-risk expeditions that push the boundaries of adventure. With a career steeped in exploration, he offers a unique perspective on the human experience, shaped by his own diagnosis of Bipolar 2 at age fourteen.
Richards' newest book, Bi-Polar presents a stunning visual collection of 300 photographs, organized around the emotional polarities that define both his life and work. Through themes of hope and fear, pride and shame, awe and contempt, culminating in the profound concept of love, he invites us to reflect on the complexities of the human condition. This striking collection not only showcases jaw-dropping landscapes and vanishing ways of life but also explores the intricate relationship between humans and the natural world.
Join us for an afternoon that promises to inspire and connect, as Richards guides us through his artistic vision and the transformative power of storytelling. Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with a true pioneer in the world of adventure photography!
Books will be available for purchase at the event from {pages} a bookstore.
The Manhattan Beach Library Speaker Series is made possible by the generous support of the City of Manhattan Beach. Refreshments for this event are generously donated by the Friends of Manhattan Beach Library.

Manhattan Beach Library was started as a subscription library in 1910 by the Neptunian Women's Club of Manhattan Beach.
The library became part of LA County Library in January 1915, making it one of the oldest continuing libraries in the county system. The library moved into a separate building in 1957 and to its current location in 1975. In 2013, construction began on a new more modern building that would meet the needs of the 35,000 residents in the 3.87 square mile community.
On May 1, 2015 the new 21,500 square foot building designed by architectural firm Johnson Favaro opened. It features a two-story modern design with panoramic ocean views, an interactive children's exhibit, fireplace, automated materials handling system, and self-check machines
