American Sign Language (ASL) is a great way to start communicating with your pre-verbal child. In this quick intro to ASL, we'll learn the sign for "I Love You" and other useful signs along with tips to incorporate ASL into their learning, followed by making a handmade Valentine with your little one. For early learners 0-3 with their caregivers.

These programs are part of Smart Start at the Library, LA County Library's collection of programs and services for early learners ages 0 - 5 and their caregivers.

La lengua de signos estadounidense (ASL) es una forma de empezar a comunicarte con tu hijo preverbal. En esta breve introducción al ASL, aprenderemos el signo de «Te quiero» y otros signos útiles junto con consejos para empezar a incorporar el ASL en el aprendizaje, y después, harás una tarjeta de San Valentín a mano con tu pequeño. Para niños de 0 a 3 años con sus cuidadores.

About the branch

Hawaiian Gardens Library was founded in 1974 with a bookmobile serving the community. The next site for the library was at 12134 Tilbury Street (the former city hall); it served the community from 1979 until December 1987.

On January 19, 1988, the library was relocated to a 2,000 square foot building in the Hawaiian Gardens Town Center. The official dedication was held on March 9, 1988.

In 1989, the facility was expanded to 4,000 square feet. An open house, with City and County dignitaries attending, was held on October 18, 1989.

The Hawaiian Gardens Library moved to a new 5,585 square foot building that is shared with the City of Hawaiian Gardens Public Safety Center at 11940 Carson Street in December 2008.
