USC professor Dr. Karen Lloyd will discuss her hunt for life beneath Earth’s surface. For adults.

The Malibu Library Speaker Series presents Karen Lloyd at Malibu Library on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at 7 pm.

USC professor Dr. Karen Lloyd will discuss her hunt for life beneath Earth’s surface. In her 2025 book Intraterrestrials: Discovering the Strangest Life on Earth, she shares what scientists are learning about microbial life and how research expeditions to the planet's most extreme locations broaden our understanding of what life is and how its earliest forms may have evolved.

Dr. Lloyd investigates life from the bottom of the ocean, through the jungles of Central America, to the high-altitude volcanoes of the Andes, examining different life forms living in foreign and extreme conditions.

Dr. Lloyd is the Wrigley Chair in Environmental Studies, Professor of Earth Sciences, and Professor of Marine and Environmental Biology at the University of Southern California. She has contributed to the discovery of strange new types of microbial life inside Earth's crust.

Copies of Intraterrestrials will be for sale from Malibu Village Books. A book signing will follow the event.

RSVPs required.

About the branch

Malibu Library, located in the Malibu Civic Center Complex, was established in 1970 by the County of Los Angeles Public Library. Prior to 1970, a bookmobile provided library service to the Malibu community serving residents in Topanga Canyon and along the Pacific Coast Highway.

On April 22, 2012, a grand opening celebration was held to mark the completion of a $6 million renovation of the Malibu Library, designed by the architectural firm of LPA, Inc. and funded by revenue generated from local property taxes.

The new sustainable, LEED-certified library has been redesigned to represent Malibu's sand, sea and sun culture with features such as:

-A replica of the Adamson House tile rug in the main lobby
-A photographic exhibit featuring historical images of the area
-The Children's area featuring a marine life motif, including an 8' by 14' porcelain tile art piece designed by artist Christine Nguyen
-A Teen area that embraces Malibu's surf culture.
