African American & Black History Month: Artist Charles McGee

In-Person Program

Celebrate African American and Black History Month with an art workshop inspired by the work of Detroit artist Charles McGee. For Ages 12-18.

McGee was known for his use of repeating patterns, strong contrast, and sculptural forms to explore history, identity, and community. Participants will create their own paper sculptures using layered shapes, geometric designs, and contrasting elements to build visual impact. Teens will learn how McGee transformed simple materials into powerful works of art, then apply those ideas to design a three-dimensional piece that reflects their own creativity and perspective.
