Do you have a household item in need of repair? Don’t trash it! Come fix it for free at our Fixit Clinic where we will provide the space, tools, and expert coaches to help you troubleshoot and repair your well-loved item. For adults.

Bring your broken or nonfunctioning electronic gadgets, appliances, computers, toys, sewing machines, fabric, and textile items for assessment, troubleshooting, and possible repair.

Please Read First.
We often throw away things that stop working and replace them with new ones instead of repairing them. This creates a big problem for our environment because our landfills are filling up too quickly, and electronic waste is a significant source of pollution.

To help address this issue, we encourage you to learn how to fix things instead of throwing them away. Whether it's electronics, appliances, computers, toys, bicycles, clothes, or other items, please bring them to us for assessment, disassembly, and possible repair. We'll provide you with a workspace, specialty tools, and guidance to help you disassemble and identify problems. Even if we cannot fix your item, you'll learn more about how it works and how it was made.

FAQs
Does pre-RSVP save a spot?
RSVP'ing beforehand lets us know what to expect when recruiting a volunteer with that skill and expedites the check-in process. It does not guarantee a spot, and you will not receive priority over walk-ins. This event is first-come, first-served. If you arrive as a walk-in or pre-RSVP at 12:00 PM, you will be served when a spot (or specific skilled coach) is available. Why RSVP? Because you will receive reminder emails and updates on upcoming events, while the walk-ins do not. Please note we will not serve anyone who arrives after 2:30 pm.

How is the parking?
The Library has street parking and parking in the small lot next door.

How many items can I bring to the event?
Please bring ONE ITEM that needs to be repaired. We will do our best to resolve the problem, but not every case is successful. Additional items brought in will be listed as walk-ins and serviced on a case-by-case basis.

What items do you not repair?
We do our best when it comes to repairs, but not everything is made to be repaired. We have a 67% success rate. There are some items that our program is not equipped to handle. One rule is that if you cannot carry it in, please do not bring it.

Here's a list of items we cannot repair at our clinics.

  • Mobile Phones and Tablets
  • Computer software
  • Any Mac or Apple products
  • Printers

Does this cost money?
This event is free to attend, but it is not a drop-off or fix event. Instead, it is a hands-on event where participants can learn how to repair their items with the help of our expert coaches.

What if my item needs a replacement part?
As this is a free event, we do not provide replacement parts. If your item requires additional or replacement parts, you will be responsible for any costs incurred. The attendees are responsible for purchasing and bringing the necessary parts on the day of the event.

Will you accept walk-ins?
We will accept walk-ins if there is time, but it depends on how quickly we can repair the items of the pre-RSVP'd attendees.

Do you take donations of tools and supplies?
Oh boy, do we. If you have any old tools you no longer need, please bring them to the next LA Fixit Clinic or email us at info@lafixitclinic.org to arrange a drop-off location.

About the branch

Friendly El Monte, the End of the Santa Fe Trail, was incorporated in 1912. The city was once home to Gay's Lion Farm during the 1930s and famous for the roaring lion on MGM's logo.

The El Monte Library was founded in 1890, and joined the Los Angeles County Public Library in 1913. It has been at its present location since 1967.
