Join us to create a watercolor postcard inspired by professional artist Chiura Obata who was an inmate at a Japanese incarceration camp and taught classes in drawing and painting portraits and remembrances of life before incarceration. For adults.

They taught classes in drawing and painting that varied from scenes of daily life in camps to portraits and remembrances of life before incarceration. Gaman art reflects their spirit of resourcefulness and creativity.

This program is part of One Book, One Coast which brings together library systems across California, Washington State, and Oregon for a shared community reading program that celebrates literacy, learning, community, and civil discourse.

About the branch

Hawaiian Gardens Library was founded in 1974 with a bookmobile serving the community. The next site for the library was at 12134 Tilbury Street (the former city hall); it served the community from 1979 until December 1987.

On January 19, 1988, the library was relocated to a 2,000 square foot building in the Hawaiian Gardens Town Center. The official dedication was held on March 9, 1988.

In 1989, the facility was expanded to 4,000 square feet. An open house, with City and County dignitaries attending, was held on October 18, 1989.

The Hawaiian Gardens Library moved to a new 5,585 square foot building that is shared with the City of Hawaiian Gardens Public Safety Center at 11940 Carson Street in December 2008.
