Join us for a screening of Chavela, a documentary peeking into the life and career of one of Mexico's most prolific ranchera artists, Chavela Vargas.

Born in Costa Rica in 1919, Chavela ventured to Mexico City in her teens to follow her dreams of being a singer. She defied all gender norms of the time, wearing men's pants with her signature red sarape and traditional huaraches, and refused to change the lyrics to feminize songs usually sung by men. Chavela openly sang to women despite not publicly coming out as a lesbian until her 2002 biography, Y si quieres saber de mi pasado. Access Chavela's discography on Freegal here, free with your LA County Library card.

Film is in Spanish with English subtitles.
