The Malibu Library Speaker Series presents NASA scientist Nagin Cox on Tuesday, September 20, at 7 pm at Malibu Library. RSVPs are required.
Cox will share stories of NASA’s “Journey to Mars” from the early rovers to the newest US traveler-Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover. Robotic exploration is the first step in the longer-term vision of international exploration of Mars by humans.
Cox graduated from Cornell University with a BS in Operations Research and Industrial Engineering and a BA in Psychology and was commissioned as an officer in the US Air Force. She worked in F-16 Aircrew Training and received a masters degree in Space Operations Systems Engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology.
As a captain, she served as an Orbital Analyst at NORAD/Space Command in Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado Springs.
In 1993, Cox joined the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and has since served as a systems engineer and manager on multiple interplanetary robotic missions, including NASA/JPL’s Galileo mission to Jupiter, the Mars Exploration Rover Missions, and the Kepler telescope mission to search for Earth-like planets around other stars.
RSVPs are required. RSVP online or call Malibu Library at 310.456.6438. This event will take place at Malibu Library.
The Malibu Library Speaker Series is a joint program of Malibu Library and the City of Malibu.
Malibu Library, located in the Malibu Civic Center Complex, was established in 1970 by the County of Los Angeles Public Library. Prior to 1970, a bookmobile provided library service to the Malibu community serving residents in Topanga Canyon and along the Pacific Coast Highway.
On April 22, 2012, a grand opening celebration was held to mark the completion of a $6 million renovation of the Malibu Library, designed by the architectural firm of LPA, Inc. and funded by revenue generated from local property taxes.
The new sustainable, LEED-certified library has been redesigned to represent Malibu's sand, sea and sun culture with features such as:
-A replica of the Adamson House tile rug in the main lobby
-A photographic exhibit featuring historical images of the area
-The Children's area featuring a marine life motif, including an 8' by 14' porcelain tile art piece designed by artist Christine Nguyen
-A Teen area that embraces Malibu's surf culture.
