Join us as we explore streetwear by learning about pattern design and then creating your own hip-hop inspired pillow with the founder of Rayo clothing line and Instructor at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, Olamiposi Somoye. Age: 16+

Fashion is dynamic, encompasses streetwear, and is representative of various communities. Streetwear is also one of the many elements of hip-hop. Olamiposi Somoye, instructor at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, will teach the basics of fashion design, pattern design, and sewing while customers create a hip-hop themed pillow. Currently Instructor at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, Los Angeles and a Denim Pattern Maker at Uniqlo, Olamiposi was born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria. Olamiposi moved to Los Angeles in 2017 to attend her Alma Mater where she graduated with an Associate's of Arts in Fashion Design and a Bachelors in Business Management. Upon graduation she moved back to her home country where she founded her clothing line Rayo and consulted for other brands, eventually making her way back to Los Angeles. Olamiposi is mostly known in the industry as a pattern maker, but she is also a Creative and Art Director for editorials, she recently debuted as a Costume Designer with her work published in Paper Magazine's website.

Attendance is limited, and advance registration is preferred. Please register every individual in your party, including kids. This will be used to save your spots in the program. We cannot guarantee availability for any unregistered attendees. This program will also be live streamed to our YouTube Channel at YouTube.com/LACountyLibrary

For in-person attendance, LA County Public Health strongly encourages masks and physical distancing indoors regardless of vaccination status. Masks will continue to be available for customers upon request. Please see the Guidelines for Attendees during the registration process for more information.

About the branch

Compton Library branch of the Los Angeles County Free library opened its doors in July of 1913, the 11th branch of today's LA County Library.

The library was located in a storefront building near Main and Tamarind Streets and was later moved to the Compton Union High School at 212 S Acacia Street.

In 1925 a separate building was erected in the City Hall Park at 123 W Almond Street, where it remained until 1974, when the current facility was dedicated at 240 W Compton Boulevard.
