We're bringing you another hip-hop related program in celebration of the 50th anniversary of hip-hop. As the title suggests, music is for EVERYONE including the deaf community. This program will be taught by Michael Agyin who is a Compton Deaf Community Advocate, TEDx speaker, and the Founder of Compton ASL Club. Join us in this guided discussion as we explore how hip-hop culture and American Sign Language (ASL)/Black American Sign Language (BSL) have impacted each other with hip-hop music. We will be screening some artistic videos that blends hip-hop and Sign Language as well as learning some basic ASL and hip-hop signs.

Compton ASL Club is a social advocacy and American Sign Language club, established in 2020, in response to make Compton  a more accessible city for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. They provide an open and safe space for the Compton community to learn American Sign Language (ASL), creating  communication access between the Deaf and Hearing while bringing  awareness about BIPOC Deaf culture, Deaf achievements, Deaf resources and, accessibility that focus on bridging the gap in teaching and showcasing ASL in urban communities. In addition, Compton ASL provides: ASL classes, private ASL tutoring, ASL accessibility training, and consulting & workshops. You can follow Compton ASL Club on Instagram or contact them at Comptonaslclub@gmail.com

About the branch

Compton Library branch of the Los Angeles County Free library opened its doors in July of 1913, the 11th branch of today's LA County Library.

The library was located in a storefront building near Main and Tamarind Streets and was later moved to the Compton Union High School at 212 S Acacia Street.

In 1925 a separate building was erected in the City Hall Park at 123 W Almond Street, where it remained until 1974, when the current facility was dedicated at 240 W Compton Boulevard.
