The thaumatrope, a toy invented in the 1820’s, is based on a type of optical illusion that is the result of a scientific principle called persistence of vision. Persistence of vision is when we see images in our eyes for a fraction of a second longer than they appear so that images on the two sides of a twirling disc appear as one continuous image.
