It’s been a rough one for the air quality here in LA County. Smog, dust, dirt, and exhaust are a part of our everyday lives here in Southern California, but his winter’s fires brought an unprecedented amount of smoke, ash, and particulate matter to our skies -- and brought concerns about air quality to the forefront of our minds. Dr. Wexler will be joining us to explain what does an Air Quality Index indicate, how to keep yourself and your family healthy, and how can we all contribute to a cleaner, healthier sky.
Dr. Wexler’s work focuses on the ways air pollution travels through the atmosphere to airways and affects different parts of the body. He uses experiments, crunches numbers, and takes into account theories in physics to do his research. Members of Dr. Wexler’s laboratory are developing new instruments for measuring air pollution and meteorology related to air pollution transport, new mathematical techniques for modeling air pollution dynamics and thermodynamics, and new exposure paradigms for understanding the neurological and cardiopulmonary health effects of air pollution. The Air Quality Research Center operates the IMPROVE air monitoring network for the National Parks Service and performs chemical analysis for the Chemical Speciation Network for the Environmental Protection Agency.
