Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by making a matchbox nicho—small, colorful boxes that honor loved ones or display religious images originating in Latin America. For adults.

Nichos blend early Spanish influences with Indigenous and mestizo designs. Though used year-round, they’re especially popular during Día de los Muertos. This activity explores this tradition by creating mini nichos with empty matchboxes. For adults.

Attendance is limited, and advance registration is required. Please register every individual in your party. This will be used to save your spots in the program. We cannot guarantee availability for any unregistered attendees.

About the branch

On February 22, 1973, the City of Lakewood, in cooperation with the County of Los Angeles Public Library, opened the George Nye, Jr. Library.

The library is named for Lakewood Mayor George H. Nye, Jr. who died while serving in office in May 1971.

The library is the second in the city and serves the population of the eastern area of the city which includes eight elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school.

An active Friends of the Library group was formed in 1972 and supports both Lakewood libraries - George Nye, Jr. and Angelo M. Iacoboni.
