Americans often mistake media consumption for media literacy. We think we understand media because we consume so much of it (some 10,000 media messages a day), but our media diet is awash in fake news, false claims, and outright fabrications. We’ve never had more access to information, yet few of us can distinguish the news from the noise. Using humorous comic art from the author's nonfiction graphic novel How to Win the War on Truth, the panel will be filled with real-world examples to help readers become more savvy media consumers.
Samuel C. Spitale is the author of How to Win the War on Truth: An Illustrated Guide to How Mistruths Are Sold, Why They Stick, and How to Reclaim Reality (Quirk Books 2022).
