Incoming West Hollywood City Poet Laureate Jen Cheng offers a workshop to inspire memorable characters using prompts and improv exercises to sharpen characters for writers of all levels. For adults.

Whether it's narrative or poetry, bring your work-in-progress or start something new. We’ll create a safe space for you to discover fresh points of view.

This program will be held next door to the library at the West Hollywood Aquatic and Recreation Center, in the Doheny Room.

Jen Cheng is a poet, writer, and multidisciplinary artist with a commitment to amplify underrepresented voices. In mid-October 2023, Jen starts her term as the fifth Poet Laureate of the City of West Hollywood and releases her new poetry collection, Braided Spaces. She is the founder of Palabras Literary Salon, celebrating BIPOC poets and writers, a founding member and Associate Producer of Pride Poets serving LGBTQ events, and the creator of the playtiles mural in Santa Monica’s Artist Alley. Jen blends East-West influences in a new form, Feng Shui Poetry. She is also a filmmaker with a documentary project celebrating LGBTQ Elders with poetry. With stories for tween audiences, mystery detective fans, and queer love, Jen is a cross-pollinator. Jen performs with WeHo Arts and Cold Tofu Improv and has published with The Feminist Toilet and The Los Angeles Press. For more fun facts: www.JenCvoice.com or social media @jenCvoice.

Attendance is limited, and advance registration is required. Please register every individual in your party. This will be used to save your spots in the program. We cannot guarantee availability for any unregistered attendees.

This event is held in-person. LA County Public Health strongly encourages masks and physical distancing indoors regardless of vaccination status. Masks will continue to be available for customers upon request. Please see the Guidelines for Attendees during the registration process for more information.

About the branch

West Hollywood Library began service to the area (then unincorporated ) in 1913. The library was previously located at Sherman School, a cottage on Clark Street, a building on Westbourne Drive, and a building near the present site. The Library has an active Friends of the Library group.

The new library was dedicated October 1, 2011.
